Anton Chekhov was born in 1860, the grandson of a serf who had bought his own freedom, and died of tuberculosis in 1904, a renowned doctor, playright, writer of hundreds of short stories, and friend of Leo Tolstoy.
The Schoolmaster and Other Stories contains 29 short stories. The first four deal with death and bereavement; the others range from satirical to farcical and include a scathing portrayal of a professional writer.
The short stories included in this ebook are: The Schoolmaster, Enemies, The Examining Magistrate, Betrothed, From the Diary of a Violent-Tempered Man, In the Dark, A Play, A Mystery, Strong Impressions, Drunk, The Marshal's Widow, A Bad Business, In the Court, Boots, Joy, Ladies, A Peculiar Man, At the Barber's, An Inadvertence, The Album, Oh! The Public, A Tripping Tongue, Overdoing It, The Orator, Malingerers, In the Graveyard, Hush!, In a Hotel, and In a Strange Land.
