What Open Library has isn't an official ebook from the publisher. They'll have a scan of the paper book. That's the PDF version. Then the scan has been ran through uncorrected OCR. That's what they provide for the epub. It seems to be legal because they hold the paper and don't allow the paper to be checked out, just the scans. I don't know how long their checkout is either.
