Fortunately, I didn't buy very much. I've been brewing it with a long steep in cooler water that gives wonderful results with the silver needles, but the hints of oxidized flavors make me think you're right and I should try really hot water to see what happens.
Right now, I'm having one of the Chinese black blends that I already knew I liked.
