That one ^. Using the device to take a screenshot is like making a recording with a colour VCR while watching a show on a black-and-white TV. The video tape will be in colour, because it is recording the colour transmission and not what is on the TV screen.

If the image on the device is in colour then it is probably faster just to display it as a colour image than it is to convert it to greyscale first.

It used to be that covers downloaded to e-ink devices from the Kobo server were all in greyscale anyway, and that made sense since it reduced download time and storage requirements. But it seems that some covers are now coming through in colour, I can't understand why they would do that on purpose, maybe it is just a mistake.

If sideloading from Calibre there is an option to send greyscale cover images.
