1.) The app works but it's thought for tablets, so it's not the greatest user experience of all (not just with the Max, it will be the same with all eInk devices until they decide to release an app eInk friendly). So, if your aim is to just read the book, you can do that, but every page turn will be a bit weird (because it's animated and eInk screens don't handle animations well) and you will also need to set a per page screen refresh, which will drain your battery more quickly.
All in all, if you want to read books purchased from Amazon, you're better off using Calibre with the DRM strip plugin and then put the file without DRM on the Max so that you can read it.

2.) I own computers with Windows, Linux and Mac and it doesn't really matter what you use. The Max itself doesn't come with any computer software, Calibre is available for all OSes and when you connect the Max to the PC it will be recognised as a normal pen drive.
Updates are not OTA, you need to download a zip file from the Onyx website, transfer it on the Max (either internal or external SD doesn't matter) and run the update from within the Max. Again, the OS of your PC doesn't matter.
