I decided to try the PIN, changed the affiliate from Kobo to Rakuten, and it works (Aura 6"). They make sure you confirm the PIN, etc. and it is pretty quick to log in.
The thought entered my head that all I would have to do would be to plug in to the computer and change the affiliate to Kobo, and I would able to break in to a found our stolen e-reader, but the PIN is needed to connect as well. Good work, Kobo! The (very poorly maintained) Kobo Insiders web site had a survery about a PIN a while back, and if I recall correctly it received positive response. I am glad it is optional.
I will most likely use this feature only when I travel, since I don't want to enter it each time. I did leave my Aura on an airliner once and wished that it had been protected; I did get it back after an agonizing 2 weeks.
