No, that doesn't work either.

I have several Eng-Eng dictionaries on my devices. The only one displaying this problem is the official Kobo one. It looks like this dictionary is styled as an ordered list (<ol><li> etc). I've occasionally seen this same problem with ordered lists in epubs on Kobos, too, when the list item number has more than a single-digit. With a book, I think your original suggestion of increasing the left margin in the CSS will correct it, but not in the dictionary widget it seems.
