If the purpose is to get real people using the change and then asking what they think afterwards, then it will work.

Which home screen you get has nothing to do with how you install the firmware. It will be something done during the first sync after the upgrade. And that will be recorded on the Kobo servers. It does mean if you used a fake email address, Kobo can't contact you for your opinion.
Also, the survey could happen on the device. Maybe after a certain time it will pop up a survey or something and collect the opinions that way.
