The *.src archive has a build script in it.
Which calls KindleTool with -Kindle5
That (in KindleTool) means all touch screen devices.

The only thing that saved you was the KindleTool that packaged the application did not know about the 6th, 7th, and 8th generation models at the time.

Following the link in the first post to the Wiki article will tell some (Kindle experienced) ambitious soul how to test the application on the newer models, without bricking them at least.
