Many thanks Kovid, that's the answer right there.
I was using the correct save template, but I had selected "Save....in a single directory".
Maybe if the Preference options became "Save to disk in folders" and "Save to disk in Author sequence", then even silly people like me could be returned to the path of righteousness?
