The Glasswrights' Apprentice (The Glasswrights Series Book 1) by Mindy L Klasky
Books 2-5 were part of the great open road freeby deal but this one wasn't included so you may want to pick it up.
I read it and enjoyed it as a teenager but that was sometime ago

Doesn't appear to be any discount for either in the UK; this not surprising as the UK rights are held by Gollancz. Mind you, the Glasswrights series seems to be priced at £2.99 per volume for the Gateway editions which is not bad (it could be £4.99+ for the Open Road editions).
