pedantically, here's no way to format shift a kindle book delivered by amazon without stripping the DRM first,
but if you edit a file only for your own private use, not to re-sell or share , then

(emphasis mine) Actually, I can buy a Kindle book and, if it doesn't have DRM applied to it from Amazon, I can convert it to any format without any problems.
The only format that always has a form of DRM applied to it is KFX, and since that can't be converted at all yet anyway, your statement doesn't apply at all.
