Excerpt
ON-the morning of Friday, the 9th of May, at twenty minutes past eleven, a messenger from the Crédit Lyonnais rang at No. 13, Rue du Bon Diable. Under his arm was one of those leather portfolios in which bank messengers are accustomed to carry drafts, bills of exchange, and like valuable papers. In this instance the portfolio contained thirty bank-notes of one thousand francs each, destined for M. Janvier. The occasion for the withdrawal of so large a sum was the birthday of his niece Corinne.
