I tried to remove all my additions and start with one small PDF file with small filename without special characters in the top-level root directory. And voila, it worked. Afterwards, I added several other books at once and it worked also.

I have to admit, it is very strange and unexpected behavior.

I hope this helps anybody who has this device.
