The thing about a front light is that it helps to increase the contrast by making the background look whiter. As one gets older one needs greater contrast. The existing contrast is often not sufficient. Bold does a similar job but unfortunately it makes the font too thick.

The light on the page doesn't need to be perfectly even. My i86 is not perfect in that regard but if one concentrates on the text instead of the device you don't notice it.
