The reason why Amazon should be interested is technical books, including text books. However, Amazon has clearly decided that their marketing clout is enough to force publishers to issue sub-standard ebooks. This has already happened at O'Reilly which issues their
ebook bundles in PDF and ePub and also in MOBI (which require much work on their part to make them half way readable) with the proviso that MOBI is only supported by O'Reilly on the Kindle.
The latest 1.2 firmware for the K1 includes Greek and monospaced font support. Presumably the K2 will have this out of the box. This is to address two of the glaring shortcomings of the AZW on the Kindle for technical ebooks, but there are others. The image zoom is probably also primarily for technical books. Based on the User's Guide, the K2 might have upgraded table support too. What Amazon seems to have decided to do is to tweak MOBI rather than switch to ePub. I just hope this does not make AZW a superset of MOBI.
