Don't forget, a computer can be set up to dual-boot, very easily. And if your laptop has enough free space, you wouldn't need to replace the boot drive first (though that would be the best time to do it, I suppose.) I'd think a modest "starter" linux install could get by on maybe 50Gb or less.
