Swiping gestures aren't required when reading. Just tapping the screen is all that is needed. The majority of the screen is dedicated to page forward. Only about 1/5 of the left side of the screen is used for paging back. So, you can page forward and backward with your left hand using the touch screen.
Some of the books I read have links referencing footnotes, etc. in the text. If some of those links happen to be at the far right of the screen, I may tap one on accident. That's the only frustration I've had using the touch screen, and one reason i like having the page press buttons. If you find this happens to you, tap the top of the page to show the toolbar. There is a back button there which will take you back to the page you were on.
Some things to note.
- You can't turn the touch screen off, so there is still a possibility you may turn the page on accident by touching the screen.
- As others have mentioned, the page press areas aren't real buttons, and there is no raised area that indicates where they are by feel, nor is there any tactile press. The only feedback you get is the haptic feedback.
- The page press buttons don't function in all areas of the device. You can use them to scroll up and down in your list of books, and to page forward and back while reading. Areas like the goodreads and store apps require swiping up and down.
- You can adjust the sensitivity of the page press buttons to require more or less pressure to activate them. 3 settings - low, medium, high. They don't require much pressure even on the high setting.
I alternate between page press and touch screen. It just depends on what is more convenient at the time, or if the text I'm reading has reference links (as I mentioned above). I find the press zones are in appropriate positions for how I hold my voyage, so I don't typically have issues knowing where to press. However, my aim is off from time to time. The haptic feedback helps on these occasions (if you don't feel it, you know you missed the zone).

-is the glass flush screen better than paperwhite? Does it smudge and ruin reading experience?

Like any touch screen you will get fingerprints on it, but it has never been noticeable to me while reading. The matte screen does a good job of hiding them.

-does kindle still have issues with word spacing? Is it easy to fix?

I've not really noticed any word spacing weirdness.
