Isn't that a common problem with a series though GlenBarrington? I mean the first book of a series you are getting to know the world and the characters in it and how they will react to situations, but in the 2nd, 3rd, etc. you know all of that already and so the tension flags (unless new characters are brought in with new twists to the situation).
