Perhaps this isn't supported in every Windows version. What version of Windows are you using and is it 32 or 64 bit?
Thanks for responding!!

The OS is Vista 64bit, but I am running the 32 bit version of Calibre. When I googled the API in question, I discovered many Vista users were having issues with calls to this particular API in other applications.

So at this point it looks like I need to revert back to v2.71 or I could try v2.78 as this version doesn't have this problematic call. Once again thanks for your help.
