The Kindle happily reads non-DRMed Mobipocket ebooks. And there's even a way to find out the Kindle's Mobipocket PID, and so download DRMed Mobipocket ebooks for your Kindle.
The Kindle also reads PDF, although that's not very good if the PDF isn't sized for a 6" screen.
You also don't have to pay for translations - just use Mobipocket creator (free) and copy via USB.
