Turns out Apple approved the beta app very quickly, so that's now going out to the people who've replied so far.
One other thing I should have mentioned: when you launch this version for the first time, you should see a screen asking you to wait while it "Updating database...". For me, that took around 1.5 seconds per thousand books. Once that's happened, that screen should only appear briefly on future launches. If you end up doing a big book transfer again, you'll see that screen again.
