I dont agree comic books are more or less urban fantasy and they are doing better than ever
but you are correct I heard similar. Rachel Caine used kick starter for a new book in her Weather Warden series after her publisher didn't buy it And she was probably able to match what 10k or so she would have gotten from the publisher as the advance for a mid list author.
