My Nokia E71 appeared only 1 years after the first iPhone. I doubt Nokia (or Apple) wanted to collaborate ... in fact no common charging and data interface was wanted by the manufacturers until someone from the EU, probably exasperatedly looking for a specific charger in the Parliament, forced them to do it, Apple resisted however.
So, in my family, harmony reigns. The Applecharger coming with the iPhone 7 plus can charge any appliance, the "regular" chargers can charge the iPhone - the only cloud darkening the sunshine is that I might need to pay inflated prices for a second Apple USB cable should the original get damaged or stolen or lost.
