The first is a new firmware update that you can optionally install or wait for the auto update to download, but isn't required for your Kindle to continue connecting to Amazon, the second is an update from last year that all older Kindle's needed to continue connecting to Amazon (a security cert update IIRC). The security update wasn't required by your device.
