In the Netherlands, you could end up having to sell your house and moving into a very small apartment. When living on welfare only, you'll probably only be able to afford rent/gas/electricity, some clothing, and food and a bit of convenience stuff if you're very frugal. There are even possibilities to get rid of very large debts, although you'll be living by the skin of your teeth for 3 years.

However, normally, you don't have to be afraid to end up on the streets; if *that* happens, you probably have some very serious issues besides not having a job.

We have people over here who don't have a lot of money and/or needed support from the state. I've been one of them in the past, and could be one of them again if I'm unlucky, but I never had to fear ending up homeless. I can't even imagine it.

I hope your situation gets better soon.
Social security only applies is she is very disabled and then it could be up to 5 years before she gets approved. Or if you are retirement age, 62 or 67.5 (for full benefits) and have paid in all your adult life.
