Is the lightness of the device getting in the way of the increased screen size? No.
The KA1 gives a reader to -both- those who need a larger screen (but not a lighter device), -and- to those who need a lighter device.
The battery life has been discussed to death here. Start with a 24 hour day, subtract 15 (suggested battery life of the KA1 on a single charge), you're left with 9 hours. Subtract 5 for sleep, despite the average being closer to 8) and you're left with 4 hours. Four hours of time not spent reading if and only if you don't have access in any of the time to an outlet or portable charger. And that assumes you're going to read for 15+ hours of the day.
If you don't like the trade off Kobo went with with the KA1 then don't buy it.
