FWIW, sending the e-mail froze my phone. Turning it off and on again has restored it and it appears the mail was sent.
So, last night I was having some trouble getting to the internet from my phone ... so after sending off the logs I decided to try connecting again. Naturally, it worked.
So, maybe the phone was just in a bad mood about the internet yesterday???
