Similar to the Expanse/Revelation Space is G.S. Jennsen's universe starting with Starshine.

Tanya Huff had a new Confederation universe novel in 2015, does that make it contemporary? Mil, no shooting colonists. Oddball alien bits.

Not contemporary but a longtime comfort re-read is Kate Elliot's Jaran series. More like Foreigner where its not about the science, and like Foreigner lots of world building. Romance aspect but no sex scenes.
