I doubt I'm the only one who sets it once and forgets it, so it just might work for others who leave the light at one setting like me.

I don't know how you can do that. I adjust mine lots of times every day. I find that the ambient light affects what I need, so the more light around the higher the light level, the less light around, the lower the level. And, there is often a change as my eyes adjust. I read in bed with the light off, and I normally change the light level when I start, and drop it a bit more after ten or fifteen minutes. But, I rarely use the light slider, I normally do this in book sliding my finger along the edge of the screen.
