I ended up extracting the zip file, updating the files in KoboRoot.tgz with the ones from KSM08_ext_aura_one_03b.zip, and copying the updated tgz into the .kobo directory. It prompted me to handle update, which I did. But nothing seems different and wifi doesn't work.
I am sorry you are having problems with KSM. What you did, should work. But my intention was different. There a two steps involved: The first is to install KSM as it is explained in the first post. The second step is as follows (I quote from here)
  • extract KoboRoot.tgz from the uploaded archive
  • copy the extracted KoboRoot.tgz into .kobo of your device
  • safely eject and disconnect your device
  • select (in KSM home) "handle update" > "install update" (do not select "install partial update")
  • wait until the device has rebooted

I do not have my device with me, from memory it is:
(KSM home) tools > ksm diverse.msh > del KSM.sh
