Your Kindle for PC probably automatically updated to the latest version which now allows downloading KFX files for those devices that can use it. There are a couple of threads about this in here.

You might be able to uninstall your Kindle for PC and download an older version. This is discussed in those other threads. I also saw a link to a site that has them available to download. I don't recall if it was in one of those threads or while googling this topic, but it is there.

If you do install an older version be sure to turn off automatic updating. That's probably what caused your problem.

Another solution is to register a device that can't read KFX files and then download the file to transfer it to that device. Calibre will then be able to convert it. If I recall correctly the Paperwhite first generation is the latest Kindle that can't handle KFX.
