You can specify in personal.ini for individual stories that they shouldn't use the first image found and instead use the author avatar image (that you've found the URL for yourself). Example:

Cover updates aren't control in personal.ini. Image and cover support has evolved over time and it's rather overly complicated.

You can control whether the cover in the epub is updated on each download/update, and set a default (see attached). Then your injected covers will be protected.
