Edit: it seems to have something to do with the comma, and/or spaces around the hyphen. It looks like the reader tries to create its own author sort, instead of just using the entire string.

edit: even replacing comma-space (", ") with an underscore, as I did with the Kindle, changes nothing. I've replaced it in Authors as well as Author_Sort. Maybe the Kobo also removes "_" for space, and then does its own sorting.

edit: I've put the series in the title, like so:

Series Name 01 - Book Title.

The reader just ignores everything before the hyphen. Why does this have to be so difficult?!
