Opening books from a link

I have been scanning in a number of my books as PDF files but because I'm backing up on a free cloud site these files would take up too much space if I backed up after adding to Calibre. I therefore proceed as follows.

I store the PDF file in a Win Explorer folder and then temporarily add it to Calibre so that I can enter the metadata into Calibre. I then create a link to the PDF file stored in Win Explorer; this appears in the Calibre Book Details column. I finally delete the PDF book in Calibre - I was pleasantly surprised to find that Calibre allowed this; I feared that Calibre might object.

Right, I can now access the book from Calibre, but only if I remember to click the link in the Book Details column. If I'm on autopilot and click the title entry instead then, of course, I get an error message because there is no book in Calibre to open. Not catastrophic, just mildly irritating. Is there any way to access the link and open the book by clicking on the title entry?
