I was preparing for further steps by downloading the other files needed to complete the process and found that while the latest firmware linked in that post for the KT3 is 5.8.5 that Amazon shows 5.8.7 as the current firmware.
Is the post out of date? Is there a reason to stay with 5.8.5 instead of the current firmware?

It is your choice.
Use the version of consumer firmware you prefer.
The main reason for that list, is that people have trouble figuring out how to get other than current firmware from the Amazon download server.
(All of those links end up at the 'official' Amazon download server after being re-directed.)
There is a 'missing' version from the list, 5.8.6 (5.8.7 is on your device's Amazon page).
But so far, no one has asked that it be added.
Translation: Do you need 5.8.6?
