That seriously sounds like whatever the charger you were using with it originally was bad and you're lucky they replaced the device for you as it wasn't Kobo's fault.
I've had the screen turning on/off thing with a phone charger and I would guess that it is related to it thinking it's connecting/disconnecting but I doubt that had anything to do with the charger shorting out.
