But did you check in the About window if it was actually updated successfully to 1.5?

Did you see the "Installing/Updating" page in several languages when you first turned it on? If it reboots AFTER this screen, it should have installed whatever firmware you choose. If it simply rebooted and gives you the above dialogue, nothing got installed.
The only thing I can think of is the most stripped down manual install possible:
1) With the DR1000 off, remove the SD card. Start DR1000. You will only see "Settings". In Settings:
a) Check the current version in the "About" window.
b) Oops, No way to reset to factory defaults, since that seems to be only applicable to an inserted SD card...
Turn off DR1000
2) On your computer, using a cardreader:
a) Format card
b) create a folder "System" at the root /
c) Extract latest.zip or dr1000-1.5-build1500.zip (same) from iRex firmware repository
d) Copy ONLY the "update" folder over into "System". This folder should contain:
- kernel.bin
- micro.bin
- redboot.bin
- rootfs.bin
- update.dat
Nothing else!!
3) Insert SD card into DR1000 and turn on. You should see after a short delay the specific update screen informing you about just that, in 4 languages. After a while it will reboot. Now you should be able to go to Settings/About and see the new version info. (Visually you should be able to immediately tell from the empty slots on the left side of the toolbar)
If it worked, you can now add/replace the remaining content on the SD card.
If that doesn't help, I can't think of anything else...
