Actually some of it is true.
There are studies with school children in South Korea. They proof that the children which are reading a lot in books or on monitors, are getting farsightedness because they don't play enough outside where the eyes are trained to see things far away.
It is especially a problem for children younger than 17 because the eyes aren't fully developed yet. If you are older that that it's not that tragic but one should watch out of the window every 20 minutes and focus some remote items.
Obviously that has nothing to do with LCD displays but with the prolonged impact on short distance to the reading device (book, e-book, tablet, ...).
I suggest you don't insult other posters by claming they have a 'tin foil hat'. That's very rude.
