I have to say that ereaders are meant to be a single purpose device versus a multipurpose ipad. I do find that the ereader screens are much nicer and gentler. Having a single purpose device helps me to focus, and I end up reading better with an eBook reader.

As for notetaking while reading, I use Hovernote and I also use Floating Apps Pro. I think this is potentially superior to an ipad, though might not be better than a Windows based tablet.
