I don't generally use the app for reading, as I do most of my reading on my e-ink Kobo, but I do have it installed for easy shopping, so I opened it up.
For me, tapping the middle of the screen once in the book brings up several small gray icons in the lower right hand corner of the screen. They are arranged vertically, if I remember correctly, top is settings, then brightness, then font (Aa icon), then navigation and then a circle with a dot to turn the icons invisible again.
The icons were a gray color and smallish, so they didn't exactly jump off the page, but they were there. If you don't see them after knowing where to look, maybe try clearing the app cache and then uninstall/reinstall, reboot device?
I didn't notice any issues with page display in the single book I called up.
