If it will run Vista, it will run Win7, IME.
As far as I'm aware, there is NO A-V that hasn't had problems. But both AVG and Avast are reasonably well thought of. And you are incorrect about defender. But do what you will. However, only an up-to-date A/V is of any value at all.
