I was a library page once upon a time. I still have vivid memories of being told to destroy a copy of the Encyclopedia Britannica. It had been ill used by patrons and was being thrown out and replaced, but they wanted it rendered unsuitable for trash picking. I understood and complied, but it still felt like sacrilege.
