Difficulties in Hambly's personal life came to a head around the time she wrote these Winterlands books, and it shows in her characters' experiences in this book. Small-to-middling spoiler about those difficulties and how they map onto the book:
Spoiler:
Hambly was married to SF author George Alec Effinger, whose struggles with drug addiction obviously influenced her depiction of demonic possession.
Some of the mixed reviews reflect how much bleaker this book is than much of her work.

I enjoyed the new trilogy, but I took years to steel myself to read it. This book doesn't leave off at a good stand-alone point.
