I think you'd probably be happy with any of them really.

As to the ePub/kePub thing. The Kobo's support regular ePub in addition to their kePub (which Calibre can convert on the fly during send to device). The Kobo's actually have two separate sets of reading software, one for ePub's (& PDF's) and one for kePub's. Both display books a bit differently and it's a personal choice thing as to which you prefer. I personally use kePub, but lots of folks prefer ePub.

The Kindle is nice too (I don't have, but I bought one for my Mom last Christmas so have some experience) and wouldn't likely disappoint.

One nice thing with the Kobo's is the ability to easily add your own fonts if you choose and the ability to adjust font boldness. They are also more adjustable when it comes to line spacing and margins (Kindle gives three options for each), if that matters.

I do find my Kobo (Aura HD) slightly less responsive at times than the Kindle, but it's not a huge difference and is only noticeable at all occasionally.

Of course the best thing would be if you have a retailer close enough that you can go get a little hands on time with at least some of the devices in question.
