@MarjaE - I was thinking of a smartphone camera video rather than screen capture video.

I occasionally get to see calibre running on OSX but I've not noticed anything like what you've just described, I'm pretty sure I would have, had it been there. From your description it does sound like an operating system behaviour, its not the sort of thing one could write into a program inadvertently - but if its only happening when you start calibre... I can only imagine that there's an obscure setting somewhere in OSX that the calibre start-up code triggers for some equally obscure reason.

Maybe its a Qt thing. Do you use Sigil? It's another x-platform program that uses Qt for user interaction functionality, you could try installing it to see if exhibits the same behaviour on start up.
