That's what I'm afraid of. I want to find out for sure before I give up, though.

If the library really is no longer compatible with Sony, then I'll have to decide if I want to keep using the Sony and just sync from the PC software, or look into alternative readers such as Kobo.

I haven't used the direct access on the reader all that often, but there have been a few times when I was glad to have it.
