Sideloading isn't "crippled" you can add books just fine, but Calibre doesn't have a way to support the auto creation of collections on Kindle devices.

Kindle firmware is more limited in that you don't have the options Kobo's have for adjusting margins & line spacing (Kindle's have only a few settings for each) and also don't have the same font handling options.

Looking at the Kindle Collection Manager thread it appears to have some issues in newer firmware and according to the thread only works on some models...

Jailbreaking won't make sideloading (loading via USB) and easier and yes a jailbroken device can still load books from the Kindle store.
