The DRM part was strictly speculation on my part since that seemed to be the general thought in this thread as to why people might be having issues.
This is also speculation but my guess would be that it's possible that Sony Reader for PC has newer DRM components than the firmware in the reader itself, so it can decode it and allow the reader to read it once it is transferred onto it (the reader itself wouldn't be required to decode the DRM since PC already had).
