Hi,
I'm enjoying the new update so far.
- Had a lot of trouble getting the font update. Had to retry maybe 6 or 7 times. Quite often the device would turn itself off, without blanking the screen. Finally got it, but this level of difficulty is a bit worrying considering there are only some hundreds of us trying to download. Hope they get it right before they have a *lot* of users trying to connect. The first parts of the update went mostly OK - a few times the wired connection couldn't be found.
- I haven't noticed any new font usage. Anyone else?
- Confirm, sound can't be turned off. There should be an option to turn navigation sounds on and off. I still might want to listen to MP3s without having "plock" on every key press.
- The note taking is really quite useable now. However if you open a note template, an edited version is saved, even when you make no notes. All in all I'm unsure about this saving mechanism, but it will do for now.
The erase works fine here. It deletes the whole path touched by the eraser. (This is different from the option to draw in "white"). The screen redraw is poor though. The edges of the deleted path are still visible until the whole page is redrawn. Surely it should be possible and more efficient to do a redraw of a rectangle surrounding the deleted path? This is how I have programmed this kind of function in a Windows application. Maybe it's a limitation of eink.
- The battery indicator seems permanently disabled. (I remember in 2.4 it was only enabled in certain contexts...)
- The PDFs opening at the last page read helps a lot. Can zooming be the next big priority please!
- Menus are now much more readable with the longer file names.
The menus look nice, but there are too few entries per page. Remember, page turns are slow! Let's design with the hardware limitations in mind! Icons should be small, and the vertical size of entries should expand to accomodate descriptions if they exist. At the moment, a LOT of screen estate is wasted on entries with one-line file names and no description.
(BTW, do I have to write an XML file to give my files a description? One per file? I haven't experimented with this yet.)
Re. R2D2 - If I am reading a document, and I press DOCS, this takes me back to the document's folder. Doesn't this work for you?
I agree about the progress bar - silly to put this in the place of the page numbers.
There is quite a long way to go with the software side of the Iliad

On the other hand I can see lots of potential

I'm just surprised that iRex have released it in this state - if it was my baby I would have wanted it to be much more ready...
